A Little This, A Little That . . . (Including a bit of What I Wore This Spring)

As many of you know, I’m doing most of my posting these days over at Substack, although for now at least, I’m keeping my Monthly Book Posts here. I do miss much of what we shared here over the past years, although to be honest, the last three or four years have brought significant increases to the costs of blogging. As well, the nature of blogging has shifted noticeably over the 17+ years I’ve been posting here (away from personal blogging; towards more monetized sites), and I decided it might be worthwhile to try another platform.

I still have reservations about that decision, but I’ve made a commitment, and for the foreseeable future, I’m going to honour it — at the very least, I’ve got to keep posting for the year that a few paid subscribers have generously signed on for!

I know that those of you who had email subscriptions here have also subscribed to emailed postings on Substack. I also know, however, that a substantial number of this blog community never subscribed. So in case you are someone who just pops in periodically to check what’s new here, you may have missed out on knowing where I’m hanging out these days.

If you’re someone on both mailing lists, I apologize for any duplication. But for those who just pop in periodically, I’ve recently posted one of those What I Wore posts that readers here seemed to enjoy. Here’s one of the photos from that post

And here’s the Substack-generated Image the platform provides for me to invite readers to stop by. . . .Just click on this link . (You don’t even need to click your ruby-red heels together! If you prefer, you can just pop in occasionally to see what I’ve been up to, but subscriptions are free. I’ve heard that it’s easier to comment (and to see other comments) if you download and use the mobile App, and I have to acknowledge that commenting on Substack is not as intuitive as on other (most!) platforms. (On the other hand, I haven’t had to delete umpteen spam comments in another language, so there’s that advantage from my perspective 😉

Besides the emailed posts which I send out from Substack on a near-weekly schedule, I’ve been posting a shorter Note almost every day in June. These do not get sent out by email subscription, so I don’t have to worry about becoming a nuisance in your emailbox, but that also means that sometimes a Note that I’m rather fond of doesn’t get noticed in the crowd. So if you do make your way over to my Substack page, I’d love it if you run your eyes down it and see if anything catches your attention.

This morning I posted a Note that began as a simple memory of a train station chapel I saw in Italy, but which became something more as my fingers played at the keyboard and I remembered a family hero. Here’s the photo, but you’ll have to pop over to Substack to see what I wrote.

I’d love to see you there. On the same page, a bit lower down, you’ll also find out why I’ve been hobbling lately, and you’ll notice that I’ve been getting out for walks and cycling — and that I’ve taken my sketchbook along.

As always, I welcome your feedback in the comments below OR over on Substack.

all the best,

Frances

Just a quick comment on the Italian artist referred to in today’s substack. His name was Renato Guttoso and that painting’s significance is referred to in chef Rick Stein’s programme on the food of Sicily. I hope you can track down that series. Best wishes, Elizabeth

Oh, thank you so much for this, Elizabeth! I knew my readers here are clever and well-informed, and you’ve strengthened that conviction!
